After 16 years and 580 sittings, the three-member Cauvery water Disputes Tribunal gave its final award on February 5, 2007. The Tribunal comprising of Chairman Justice N.P.Singh and members N.S. Rao and Sudhir Narain, gave a unanimous award allocating the total available water to the disputing states. Of the available 740 thousand million cubic feet, Tamilnadu was given 419 tmc ft. Karnataka 270 tmc ft, Kerala 30 tmc ft and Puducherry 7 tmc ft. 10 tmc has been allocated for environmental protection and 4 tmc ft for escapade into the sea. According to the final award, Karnataka will release 192 tmc ft to be measured at Biligundlu as a host to the interim award in which Karnataka had to release 205 tmc ft at Mettur. The Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal was notified by the Central Government on June 2, 1990 with Justice Chittatosh Mookerjee as the first Chairman and justice S.D. Agarwal and N.S.Rao as members.
